NVIDIA holds an overwhelming market share as a manufacturer of AI chips, but major technology media companies are trying to reduce their dependence on NVIDIA by developing their own AI chips. In fact, Google has developed its own processor called ' TPU ' which is specifically designed for AI processing, and Amazon is also manufacturing its own AI chip called ' Trainium '.
Microsoft also announced its own AI chip, the ' Maia 100, ' in 2023, and the second generation, the ' Maia 200, ' appeared in 2026. However, it is lagging behind Google's parent company, Alphabet, which began recording TPU sales revenue in its second-quarter 2026 earnings report, and Amazon, which has started negotiations to sell its Trainium chip to other data centers.

Amidst this situation, it has been reported that Microsoft is expected to announce its third-generation AI chip, 'Maia 300,' as early as September 2026. Furthermore, Microsoft is reportedly in discussions with TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor foundry, with the aim of delivering 300,000 AI chips by 2027.
Only tens of thousands of the previous generation Maid 200 were manufactured, and as of late July 2026, they were only operational in two data centers in the United States. However, Microsoft aims to eventually produce more than one million Maia 300s and reportedly plans to acquire major cloud customers, including AI development company Anthropic. The Information points out that constraints such as component shortages and ongoing negotiations with TSMC will be obstacles to achieving this goal.
Andrew Wall, General Manager of Azure Maia at Microsoft, commented, 'Microsoft continues to invest in custom silicon as part of its long-term AI infrastructure strategy. We do not disclose production volumes, but the reported figures do not reflect the scale of our program.'
