Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI a top priority, announcing in January 2025 that he plans to invest up to $65 billion in it.

However, Meta has pursued an internal and open development strategy to improve its AI technology, and Bloomberg reports that the $10 billion investment in Scale AI will be one of Meta's largest investments in an external AI company.

Meta and Scale AI have not commented on the discussions.

Scale AI is an AI company founded in 2016 that provides data labeling services necessary for training machine learning models. Its customers include Microsoft and OpenAI, and its last funding round was in 2024, with $14 billion (about 2 trillion yen) in support from Meta, Microsoft, and others.

Meta and Scale AI are already collaborating on Defense Llama, a military version of Meta's large-scale language model, Llama 3.
