1,171 employees of AI companies have requested support from the U.S. government for efforts to 'control the pace of AI development.'

1,171 scientists and employees from AI companies, including John Shulman of Thinking Machines, Jacob Paciocchi of OpenAI, and Dario Amodei of Anthropic, have issued a statement to the U.S. government requesting support for efforts to develop the technologies and tools needed to slow the pace of automated AI development.

Pacing the Frontier

According to the statement, top AI companies believe that automation of AI research is imminent. It is difficult to accurately predict how much automation will accelerate AI research, and there is a risk that the resulting AI systems will become unintelligible and uncontrollable due to the rapid pace of capability development.

Therefore, Shulman and his colleagues requested support from the U.S. government for an international effort to develop the technologies and governance tools necessary to intentionally control the forefront of automated AI development.

Shulman stated, 'I endorsed the statement to help foster a shared understanding of the potential need for control mechanisms as AI automation research accelerates dramatically. I hope that research institutes will begin designing such mechanisms independently, even before the U.S. government gets involved.'

Zhao Shengjia, chief scientist at Meta AI, said, 'AI is advancing at a speed that our society cannot yet keep up with. At cutting-edge research institutions, we are on the verge of realizing AI that can surpass the most brilliant humans in almost every indicator of intelligence. This will bring unprecedented social and safety risks. In order to build a brighter future, we need to develop AI based on a sense of responsibility and caution.'

Meanwhile, The Tiny Corp, which develops AI hardware and inference engines, has pointed out that 'they intend to continue development while urging other companies to slow down their development pace.'

Elon Musk is a prime example of someone who would call on other companies to limit AI development while simultaneously continuing to develop his own. In March 2023, Musk signed a statement calling for a six-month halt to AI development , yet it was later revealed that he was buying up GPUs for AI development. Subsequently, in July 2023, he founded xAI (now SpaceXAI), and in November 2023, he released Grok . Neither Musk nor SpaceXAI signed the recent statement.
