Elon Musk suddenly announced on July 15, 2026 (Japan time) that the entire X codebase would be open source. As of the time of writing, it is undergoing security-related reviews, and he says that all source code will be released once the reviews are complete. The full text of Musk's announcement and its Japanese translation are as follows.

'Once the security vulnerability review is complete, we will open-source the entire codebase of X without exception. Furthermore, we will invite a third party to act as an auditor to ensure that X's systems are indeed running on open-source code. The only thing we can trust is complete transparency.'

Once we have completed our review for security vulnerabilities, we will make the entire codebase of 𝕏 open source, with no exceptions.

Moreover, we will invite third party reviewers to examine the system that is running to confirm that the open source code is what is running.

Furthermore, immediately after acquiring Twitter, Musk stated his intention to open-source the 'algorithm for selecting posts to display in the timeline,' and the algorithm was indeed released on March 31, 2023.
