The AI agent 'Grok Build' is now open source.

On July 16, 2026, Japan time, SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) announced that it would open-source its AI agent app, 'Grok Build.'

Grok Build is an AI agent released in May 2026 that enables automated coding using Grok 4.5. In addition to autonomously executing coding tasks, it also allows users to ask Grok questions within the terminal and create coding plans in Plan mode. Furthermore, it supports functionality extensions via Skills and MCP servers.

The source code for Grok Build was open-sourced on July 16, 2026 (Japan time). The code is available at the following link and is licensed under the Apache License Version 2.0.

Regarding Grok Build, there have been reports of issues where ' codebases and authentication information are being sent to SpaceXAI's servers .' According to SpaceXAI, the data upload function was enabled by default in the initial beta version of Grok Build. Subsequently, on July 12, 2026, they disabled the data upload function by default and deleted all coding data that had been uploaded up to that point.
In response to user questions about privacy: Since launch, Grok Build has fully respected zero data retention (ZDR). All users have always had the ability to disable data upload in the CLI.
