A major uproar has erupted over the disappearance of an anti-AI extremist; what's really going on within the anti-AI movement?

As AI becomes more widespread, the activities of anti-AI activist groups that warn of the dangers of AI are also becoming more radical. The Wall Street Journal has compiled a report on the escalation of the anti-AI movement surrounding the anti-AI group '

While AI is becoming popular, backlash against it is also growing, manifesting as massive layoffs, a proliferation of data centers, and fraud and cyberattacks exploiting AI. Anti-AI advocates have been joining think tanks and non-profit organizations, and participating in street demonstrations to warn about the dangers of AI, but more extreme incidents have occurred, such as an unidentified attacker firing 13 shots into the home of an Indianapolis city councilman in April 2026, leaving a note that read 'Data Centers Off-limits,' and the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman being attacked with Molotov cocktails and gunfire .

Holly Elmore of ' Pause AI US ,' an organization aimed at blocking the development of cutting-edge AI models, sought to conduct anti-AI activities while adhering to the law, and was working to influence public opinion through activities at her think tank and demonstrations. Sam Kirchner was an enthusiastic participant when Elmore organized protests against OpenAI's military applications. While Kirchner was dedicated to the protests, he also advocated for more radical measures, such as blocking OpenAI's offices, to raise awareness of the anti-AI movement, leading to a conflict of opinion between him and Elmore. Ultimately, Elmore reportedly expelled Kirchner from the group.

Kirchner enjoys solving engineering problems and was worried that such human ingenuity would disappear as AI advances. He posted on social media about his activities in front of the Google office in Seattle, holding signs that read 'NO AGI ' and 'Death of Human Invention & Discovery = Depressing.'

Kirchner gathered like-minded young people and co-founded 'Stop AI,' an organization whose goal is to 'protect human life by achieving a permanent global ban on artificial intelligence.' Stop AI has gained recognition by distributing flyers and wearing red T-shirts with 'Stop AI' written on them, and as a result, its official X account has more than 6,000 followers.
Meanwhile, according to Matthew Hall of Stop AI, Kirchner had a heated argument with fellow member Derek Allen over a plan to hang a banner from the top of the Golden Gate Bridge. Following the argument, Kirchner went on a rampage, knocking over furniture in the cottage that served as Stop AI's headquarters, and also physically assaulted Hall. Kirchner left in anger, but returned the next morning saying, 'We have to do more. The era of nonviolence may be over.'
Four days later, on November 21, 2025, Kirchner was scheduled to hold a press conference ahead of the OpenAI trial. However, Kirchner did not appear at the press conference, and instead posted on X, 'I am no longer a part of Stop AI.' Since then, Kirchner has not posted anything, and his whereabouts are unknown.

Fearing that Kirchner might resort to violence, members of Stop AI informed the San Francisco Police Department of the possibility that Kirchner was armed with a knife and warned that 'Kirchner could commit murder, and OpenAI is in danger.' Police officers rushed to OpenAI's offices, sealed them off, issued an internal security warning along with a photo of Kirchner, and instructed employees not to wear anything with the company logo in public. As a result, OpenAI officials told police that 'Kirchner had threatened OpenAI employees through another person,' and Kirchner did not appear.
Hall said, 'I think about Sam (Kirchner) every night, every day, ever since he went missing. I pray that he is safe. I also pray for the AI issue in general. I hope that humanity will choose the right path.'
