The U.S. Department of Energy has removed approximately 6,000 government web pages related to energy saving, such as recommended air conditioner temperatures.

In the United States, a heatwave is occurring due to a phenomenon called a ' heat dome ,' where a developed high-pressure system extends outwards. Amidst this, it has been reported that the U.S. Department of Energy has deleted approximately 6,000 web pages related to energy conservation.

On July 2, 2026, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani posted a message in response to the heatwave in New York, urging people to reduce the load on the power grid: 'It's hot outside, and the power grid is working at full capacity to keep us cool. Set your air conditioners to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 25.56 degrees Celsius), turn off lights and electronic devices when not in use, and unplug whatever you can. A stable power grid means your air conditioners can keep running, and lives will be saved. Let's ease the demand and get through this heat together.'
New York: it's hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool.

Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you're not using, and unplug what you can.
Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings,…
In response to Mamdani's post, conservative X accounts strongly criticized her, saying that 'the mayor, who called for keeping the room temperature at a moderate level despite temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 37.8 degrees Celsius), is spreading communist fears.' However, some X users pointed out that the air conditioner temperature setting of '78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.56 degrees Celsius)' posted by Mamdani was not her own idea, but rather a setting recommended by the Department of Energy. In fact, Greg Abbott, the governor of Republican-leaning Texas, has also recommended the same '75 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 23.9 to 25.56 degrees Celsius)' setting as Mamdani in the past.
Approximately 24 hours after Mamdani's post that caused such a stir, an X user posted, 'It appears the Department of Energy has removed the page recommending air conditioner temperature settings.'
The Department of Energy appears to have deleted its thermostat-level recommendations to avoid people noticing that their generic recommendation was to set indoor temperatures at the same level which Zohran has asked New Yorkers to maintain during a grid-stressing heatwave. https://t.co/M5YVauiIOQ

The deleted pages included not only those related to air conditioner temperatures, but also pages on water conservation, types of insulation, and the 'Solar Decathlon Challenge,' a competition to build houses equipped with solar power generation and compete based on their performance. According to The Verge, which reported on the matter, approximately 6,000 pages were deleted. The deleted pages are saved in the Internet Archive and are still accessible at the time of writing.

Federal government officials have not given a clear reason for the deletion, but the timing is attracting attention because it happened shortly after Ms. Mamdani's post gained attention.
