Nintendo is gradually releasing the Nintendo Switch 2 and other models with replaceable batteries in Europe, while the original Nintendo Switch series will be discontinued in February 2027.

Nintendo will discontinue sales of the original Nintendo Switch series in Europe to comply with European battery regulations that will come into effect in mid-February 2027. On the other hand, Nintendo will gradually release Nintendo Switch 2 consoles and peripherals with user-replaceable batteries from summer 2026 to early 2027.

This move is in anticipation of new battery regulations that will come into effect in Europe in mid-February 2027. Nintendo explains that there are no functional differences between the current product and the revised version which will feature a replaceable battery.
The Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED models will continue to be manufactured throughout 2026 and are expected to be widely available in Europe throughout the year. However, Nintendo will stop shipping these three models to retailers and will also discontinue sales on the Nintendo Store from mid-February 2027 onwards. This shift in the European sales system comes approximately 10 years after the original Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017.

Even after sales end, you can continue to use the console and accessories you have already purchased. Furthermore, Nintendo will continue to provide services including the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online, as well as support for your ever-growing game library, for the time being.
Meanwhile, Nintendo will be gradually introducing revised versions that support battery replacement. The first to be affected will be certain colors of the original Joy-Con controllers, with the switchover starting in the summer of 2026. The revised version of the Nintendo Switch 2 console is scheduled to be released in the fall of the same year. The release dates of the revised versions may change due to manufacturing and logistics issues, and they will not be available simultaneously in all European countries.
The revised Nintendo Switch 2 will also include Joy-Con 2 controllers with replaceable batteries. Joy-Con 2 controllers will be available for purchase separately at a later date, both individually and as a set, and replacement battery kits for eligible products will also be sold at the European Nintendo Store.

Nintendo will be rolling out the revised version to countries and regions where Nintendo of Europe, Nintendo's European subsidiary, operates directly or through distributors, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Since retail stock availability and the timing of the switchover vary from store to store, Nintendo advises customers to check with their local retailer before purchasing.
