A report revealing how much OpenAI employees are using AI agents has been released, showing that even non-engineers are making extensive use of Codex.

OpenAI offers 'Codex,' an AI agent, as a flagship product alongside ChatGPT. Originally released as an agent specifically for program development, Codex has become useful for non-developer roles as well, thanks to the addition of

PC automation and business process improvement features . A report on Codex usage, categorized by OpenAI employees, organizational users, and individual users, was released on June 25, 2026.

The graph below shows the percentage of OpenAI product users who use Codex. 97.9% of OpenAI employees, 17.3% of organizational users, and 0.7% of individual users use Codex.

The graph below shows the percentage of Codex-derived tokens in the output tokens. 99.8% of the output tokens from OpenAI employees are Codex-derived.

This graph shows the rate of increase in Codex output, based on August 2025. Limiting the scope to developers, OpenAI internal output increased fourfold by June 2026. Individual users saw a 61-fold increase, and organizational users an 85-fold increase.

For non-developers, usage has increased 12 times within OpenAI, 137 times for individual users, and 189 times for organizational users.

Here's a breakdown of OpenAI employees by department, showing the trend in the percentage of Codex tokens used in their output tokens. 99% of the engineering department (dark blue), 91% of the finance department (light blue), 89% of the recruitment department (orange), and 88% of the legal department (green) use Codex. While the engineering department saw a gradual increase in Codex output even before August 2025, the growth in other departments is particularly significant from 2026 onwards.

Looking at the rate of increase in the number of output tokens as of November 2025, the research department (light blue) saw the largest increase at 53 times, followed by the customer support department (orange) at 32 times, the engineering department (dark blue) at 26 times, and the legal department (green) at 12 times.

The table below summarizes how Codex is used for each job function. In the finance department, 31% is used for coding and 34% for knowledge work. In the product and marketing departments, 25% is used for coding and 51% for knowledge work. It is noteworthy that Codex is being used for coding purposes even outside of the engineering department.

Another notable trend is the increasing use of Codex for tasks that would take a long time for a human to complete. Among Codex users, 80.6% requested tasks that would take more than 30 minutes for a human, 70.2% requested tasks that would take more than 1 hour, 42.4% requested tasks that would take more than 4 hours, and 25.6% requested tasks that would take more than 8 hours.

OpenAI commented, 'As of August 2025, Codex usage by OpenAI employees accounted for 10% of our token usage per employee. However, now Codex is used as a primary business tool across all departments, including non-engineering departments such as legal and recruitment. We believe this trend reflects the future of work, given the enhancements to agent tools and improvements in accessibility.'
