It has been pointed out that while Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro cost $200 per month, they allow users to use tokens worth approximately $8,000 and $14,000 respectively.

Anthropic offers the 'Claude Max' plan, and OpenAI offers the 'ChatGPT Pro' plan, both priced at $200 per month (approximately 32,000 yen). These are the top-tier plans offered by each company and are therefore very expensive, but on the other hand, users receive tokens far exceeding the amount paid, leading to the perception that they are 'very good value.'
What's the better business model for an AI lab, subscription or API? (1/4)🧵

Research firm SemiAnalysis subscribed to one of each type of Anthropic and OpenAI subscription and continuously applied coding workload until the weekly limit was reached. As a result, it was revealed that, compared to current API rates, a $200/month plan can yield up to approximately $8,000 (approximately 1.28 million yen) in token volume with Claude Max (20x) and up to $14,000 (approximately 2.24 million yen) with ChatGPT Pro (20x).

In other words, the point is that using APIs is far more expensive. SemiAnalysis stated that 'assuming both companies have a 75% gross profit margin on APIs, the margins each company earns from subscriptions would be as follows,' pointing out that subscriptions become significantly more cost-effective the more you use them.

In response to these criticisms, some have commented, 'I don't think this pricing is sustainable.'
Wow. My takeaway is that OpenAI is subsidizing power users at almost 2x Anthropic's rate

However, some point out that the pricing method is ambiguous.
While OpenAI's API-based token usage is calculated to be more expensive, the Wall Street Journal reports that OpenAI is considering lowering its token price. Sources say that executives are beginning to express reluctance about the company's high fees and are trying to poach customers from rival Anthropic by lowering prices.
