Samsung is pushing flash storage toward a petabyte for AI data centers - Startup Fortune
According to information shared by storage supplier Scality with the news site Blocks & Files, Samsung is developing SSDs ranging from 250TB to up to 1PB, aiming to push SSDs into the high-capacity storage market previously dominated by HDDs.
Samsung's SSDs are a type called 'nearline SSDs,' characterized by their large capacity, low price, and suitability for managing data that is accessed relatively infrequently. According to Scality, these SSDs have even lower durability than drives with shorter write cycles called QLC (quad-level cell) drives, and their WPD (writes per day) metric, which indicates how many writes can be performed per day, is about one-fifth that of QLC drives.
Therefore, it is believed that this SSD is targeting fields where 'reading' is more important than 'writing.' Specifically, these include AI datasets, media archives, and Search Augmentation and Generative (RAG) systems.

Furthermore, Samsung's SSDs are compatible with the E3L or E2 form factor, allowing for high capacity while maintaining power efficiency. This means that a total of approximately 500 PB of drives can be installed in a single server rack, allowing users to reduce the number of racks required and save on necessary floor space.
Scality reportedly stated, 'We have a joint development agreement with Samsung Memory Research Center, which means we are essentially jointly developing next-generation products. This agreement does not grant us exclusive rights. We also work with other flash providers, but we are particularly close with Samsung.'
