In March 2025, the European Commission, the EU's policy-making body, will require Apple to 'provide access to iOS connectivity features for devices such as smartwatches, headphones, and televisions from brands other than Apple' under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who is well-versed in Apple-related leaks, Apple plans to address this by adding support for AirPlay alternatives, including Google Cast, in iOS 27, which is expected to be announced at WWDC26.
Gurman points out that support for third-party streaming features will soon be available, and that this will include Google Cast.
This allows iPhone users to set AirPlay, as well as other streaming features, as the default method for transferring content between devices.
However, it is unclear at the time of writing whether support for third-party streaming features will be rolled out worldwide or if it will be limited to the EU.
Apple also allows sideloading and out-of-App-Store payments to comply with the DMA, but these are only available in certain countries and regions, including the EU.
