Project Nova is underway to give Firefox a rounder UI and bring back compact mode.

It has been revealed that the Firefox development team is working on a design system overhaul project called ' Project Nova .' Project Nova is planned to include changes to the shape and color of UI elements, a revamped settings screen, and the return of compact mode, and is scheduled to be officially released in the second half of 2026.

According to the development team, Project Nova was started to fulfill their goal of 'maintaining Firefox as the best browser for online environments.' Project Nova aims to make Firefox a 'refined, warm, fast, and adaptable browser' by introducing a unified design system.

The tabs have been redesigned with a rounded shape, and a light gradient has been introduced to the border of the active tab. Each icon has been redesigned for better visibility in both the light and dark themes, and the color palette has been refreshed with a 'fire'-inspired theme.

The following is what the Windows version of Firefox looks like with the Project Nova design system implemented. Not only have the appearance of tabs and buttons changed, but the spacing of various interfaces has been adjusted and the user flow redesigned, allowing for faster switching between split view and vertical tabs. The return of the highly requested compact mode is also planned.

The macOS version of Firefox looks like this:

A feature to easily switch theme colors will also be introduced. Here's what it looks like with a lighter color scheme.

A dark theme is also available.

Furthermore, the settings screen has been revamped, making it easier to find settings for privacy-related features such as turning AI functions on or off and data control. In addition, privacy-related features such as private windows and VPNs will be placed more prominently.

Furthermore, the results of Project Nova will be applied not only to the PC version of Firefox but also to the smartphone version.
