The movie 'Resident Evil' tells the story of Brian, a man who takes on a medical supplies delivery job, and how he finds himself in a hellish situation on a single night that will determine his fate, forcing him into a brutal struggle for survival. The film is directed by Zach Kregger, who has worked on horror films such as ' Barbarian ' and ' Weapons ,' and the lead role of Brian is played by Austin Abrams .

It turns out that the first Resident Evil game that director Kregger played was Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil 2 was the first survival horror game Kregger ever played, and he found the aspect of having to conserve resources particularly refreshing. Kregger said, 'You're forced to make difficult decisions about what to take and what to leave behind. It was a truly unique system.'
When asked about his favorite scary scene in the Resident Evil series, director Kregger replied, 'I should mention that I played it in VR, but it's a scene from Resident Evil Village . You enter the dollhouse (Beneviete House), go down to the basement, and as you're assembling a giant doll on a table, you're chased by a giant baby. The sounds the baby makes, the lights suddenly going out, and the scene where you run down the corridor and hide under the bed were all memorable.'
He added, 'That was the first time I'd ever actually stopped playing a game and taken a break. I was like, 'This is too intense.' I took off my headset, had some coffee, and came back to the game later to continue. But it was really scary. To be honest, it was terrifying.'

In addition, director Kregger explained what inspired him to take on the Resident Evil film project: 'I wanted to make a film about a story that games excel at, where a character moves from point A to point B. They go on a crazy journey, travel through various environments, and the situation escalates more and more. To me, that's very cinematic. So, I wanted to create a story set in the world of Resident Evil, but one that wasn't a story already told in the game. If I were to make a film about Leon's story, I think it would end up being pointless because the game is already so well-made. It would just be redundant and ultimately disappointing. So, I wanted to celebrate everything I love about the game by telling a story that unfolds in the corners of the game.'
Regarding Austin, the protagonist of the movie 'Resident Evil,' he said, 'He's a character that makes you imagine how the average video game player would react if they were thrown into the world of a game.' He added, 'I wanted to faithfully recreate the progression from the game, starting with a pistol, stepping up to a shotgun, and eventually getting an MP5. You'll constantly be worried about your ammo supply and take various risks, such as getting injured. Adapting the game into a movie script was a very rewarding challenge for me.'
The movie 'Resident Evil' is scheduled for release in the United States on September 18, 2026, and in Japan in the fall of 2026.
