IBM has released the 'Granite 4.1' series of AI models, open models that excel at following prompts and calling tools.
IBM announced Granite 4.1 , a compact language model, on April 30, 2026. Granite 4.1 is said to achieve higher performance compared to models of similar size by improving the quality of training data. In addition, Granite Vision 4.1 , a visual language model, Granite Speech 4.1 , a speech-to-text model, and Granite Guardian 4.1 , a safety assessment model, have also been released.

Granite 4.1 is a language model trained on a dataset worth 15 trillion tokens, and three open models have been released: 'Granite-4.1-30B' with 30 billion parameters, 'Granite-4.1-8B' with 8 billion parameters, and 'Granite-4.1-3B' with 3 billion parameters. The development team prioritized quality over quantity when building the dataset, and they are highlighting improvements in project tracking performance and tool invocation performance.
The following are the results of comparing the tool invocation performance of Granite-4.1-30B and Granite-4.1-8B with various open models. Granite-4.1-30B outperforms Gemma-4-31B-it with its thinking function turned off, and Granite-4.1-8B outperforms Gemma-4-26B-A4B-it. IBM stated, 'While thinking-enabled inference models are gaining popularity, they do not always yield efficient results. In enterprise environments, cost and processing speed are just as important as processing performance. Therefore, for certain tasks, it makes sense to use non-inference models that offer comparable benchmark performance and are more cost-effective,' highlighting the advantages of Granite 4.1.

Granite Vision 4.1 is a visual language model specifically designed for recognizing tables and graphs. Despite having 4 billion parameters, Granite Vision 4.1 has achieved a score that surpasses the frontier model Claude-Opus-4.6 in table and graph recognition performance benchmarks.

◆Granite Speech 4.1
Granite Speech 4.1 is an automatic speech recognition (ASR) model with 2 billion parameters. The graph below shows processing speed on the horizontal axis and error rate on the vertical axis, demonstrating that Granite Speech 4.1 is both fast and highly accurate.
Granite Speech 4.1 supports transcription not only in English but also in Japanese, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Furthermore, it can transcribe English audio while translating it into Japanese, Chinese, Italian, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. When transcribing from English to Japanese while translating, the error rate is lower than that of GPT-4o and Gemini 2.0 Flash.
Granite Speech 4.1 is available in three versions: the base model 'Granite-Speech-4.1-2B', 'Granite-Speech-4.1-2B-Plus' which adds speaker recognition functionality, and 'Granite-Speech-4.1-2B-NAR' which optimizes speed.
