In February 2024, Google released Gemma, a large-scale language model that is lighter than the multimodal AI Gemini and is open source and commercially available. In May, the company also announced Gemma 2, an enhanced version of Gemma.

Gemma 2 had 27 billion (27B) and 9 billion (90B) parameters, but in August, an even more compact and lightweight version, Gemma 2 2B, was released. Gemma 2 2B has a parameter size of just 2 billion (2B), making it the most compact and lightweight of the existing models, but by learning from models with larger parameter sizes, Google claims that it can achieve high performance despite its compact size.

On October 3, at Gemma Developer Day in Tokyo, Google released the Japanese version, Gemma 2 2B. Compared to Gemma 2, the Japanese version of Gemma 2B has better writing skills and the ability to accurately understand and reflect instructions, and the overall quality has improved.

Google commented, 'In our own evaluations, the Japanese version of Gemma 2 2B outperformed GPT-3.5, maintaining fast, smooth processing on mobile devices and high quality in both Japanese and English. These results suggest that, given the size of the model, the Gemma model has the potential to perform well in languages other than English.'

The Japanese version of the Gemma 2 2B model is available on the machine learning platform Hugging Face, and a training guide for developers is also available.
