X user @ros_ie9 reported that when they created an image titled 'cats for Palestine' on Canva and clicked the Magic Layer button, it changed to an image titled 'cats for ukraine.' Canva's Magic Layer is an AI function that converts an image into an editable layer element.

Another user reported that when they created the same image as @ros_ie9, 'cats for Palestine' changed to 'cats for ukraine' in the same way.

@ros_ie9 has also posted a video on X showing how the word 'Palestine' is replaced with another word using a magic layer.

The Magic Layer automatically changes the word 'Palestine' to a different expression only; related words such as 'Gaza' are unaffected. Canva has explained to the technology media outlet The Verge that they have already fixed the problem and are taking measures to prevent it from happening again.

Canva spokesperson Louisa Green told The Verge, 'We have discovered an issue with the Magic Layers feature and have promptly investigated and fixed it. We take these reports very seriously and are taking additional measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.'

The Verge points out that 'this is a huge blunder for Canva, which is increasingly trying to compete with Adobe's AI-powered design tools. The Magic Layers feature was one of the key features of Canva's recently introduced AI tools, which Canva had touted as 'the dawn of a new era of creativity.''
