Drawing app 'Procreate' clearly expresses its stance against generative AI
The iPad design app Procreate has taken a stance against generative AI, declaring that it will not introduce generative AI features into its products.
Creativity is driven by people. – Procreate®
Procreate has taken three stances: 'No generative AI,' 'Your work belongs to you,' and 'We pride ourselves on protecting your personal information.'
In addition, Procreate CEO James Cuda stated in the following movie, 'Personally, I find generative AI really unpleasant. I don't understand what's going on in the industry right now, and the various pains it's causing artists,' and announced that Procreate will not incorporate generative AI into its products. 'Our products have always been designed and developed with the idea that humans create something. I don't know exactly where this story is going or how it's going to end, but I believe we're on the right path to supporting human creativity,' he commented.
Generative AI is not our future.

The official statement and the above post are available in both English and Japanese. Procreate's stance has been widely praised by many digital artists, and the post on X (formerly Twitter) has received many supportive comments.
We highly appreciate your support, Freya!

The post below praises Procreate for speaking out about generative AI, and criticizes other companies like Adobe and DeviantArt for not responding as seriously.
LOOK how easy this is to say. Procreate rules.

Never forget how other business that depend WHOLLY on our good will as a community, couldn't look us in the eye. @Photoshop , @ArtStationHQ , @DeviantArt - I hope this shames you. https://t.co/rlD2D1AsXp
It is extremely rare for a design or drawing app to clearly say NO to image-generating AI; other companies have so far been proactive in trying to incorporate image-generating AI.
For example, Celsys, which released 'CLIP STUDIO PAINT,' tried to experimentally implement an 'image generation AI palette' that applied image generation AI, but discontinued its implementation after receiving a lot of opposition.
We have decided not to include the image generation AI function in CLIP STUDIO PAINT.

In addition, Adobe has incorporated its own image generation AI, Firefly, into Photoshop to generate images and apply it to the fill function.
Photoshop is now equipped with image generation AI, and you can quickly execute operations such as 'add a subject of your choice to an image' and 'change the background to something else' just by instructing them in Japanese, so I tried using it - GIGAZINE
On the other hand, there were also opinions that 'generative AI itself is a tool and can be used to generate creativity,' and there were also posts challenging Procreate's complete denial of generative AI.

I use Procreate to draw some of enjoy my datasets. I really Procreate as a tool and won't stop using it.
I find the negativity disappointing and a bit erasing - synthetic art is a part of a very involved creative process for me.
But, also, I do see… pic.twitter.com/sGTQPDQzQL
Procreate also stated, 'Generative AI is plundering people's creativity. Generative AI technology, which learns from plagiarism, is leading us to a barren future. Machine learning has many benefits, but we have decided that generative AI is not in Procreate's future.' They cited the possibility that the training dataset infringes copyright as one of the reasons for denying generative AI.
