The 'MAPP' mouse, designed by Masamune Shirow of 'Ghost in the Shell' fame, has been reissued after 24 years, so I took a look at its cool and smart design.

' MAPP (THE MECHANICAL DESIGNERS ACCELERATE THE PERIPHERAL PRODUCTS)' is an ELECOM mouse project that collaborated with manga artist

Masamune Shirow, known for works such as ' Appleseed ' and ' Ghost in the Shell ,' and mechanical designer Hajime Katoki . The 'M-MAPP1SM' was released in 2002. Now, MAPP is being relaunched, and a rechargeable Bluetooth mouse with a design adjusted by Shirow will be released in May 2026. We were able to borrow the reissued design mouse in advance of its release, so we checked its appearance and usability.

I took the inner box out of the outer box. The inner box opens on both sides.

Upon opening the inner box, a mouse appeared. According to the official website, the box is designed to be displayed as is.

The package includes the mouse itself, a quick start guide, and an illustration card drawn by Shirow. The illustration card may occasionally contain a limited edition illustration (only one type in total).

The MAPP reissue mouse 'M-SHIROW1' looks like this. It comes in three colors: black, blue, and white, and the one I'm using this time is white.

The dimensions are approximately 10.6 cm in length, 6.7 cm in width, and 3.8 cm in height. Below is a size comparison with a transportation IC card.

The actual weight is 78g.

This is what it looks like when an adult male actually holds it in his hand. It's an M-sized mouse that fits comfortably in the hand even for people with smaller hands, and its lightness makes it easy to use anywhere.

The mouse buttons are the left and right clicks and the scroll wheel.

There are two side buttons on the left side. You can assign functions to these buttons using '

ELECOM Mouse Assistant '.

There are no buttons on the right side.

There are no buttons on the back either.

There is a USB-C port on the front for charging.

The bottom features a power switch, a pairing button, and a Bluetooth toggle button.

First, charge the mouse. Since a charging cable is not included, connect a separately prepared USB-C cable to the mouse's USB-C port.

Connect it to a USB port on your PC or similar device.

When charging began, the mouse's scroll wheel lit up red.

Switch the switch on the bottom to turn on the power.

Press the 'Pairing' button to put the device into pairing standby mode.

This time, we'll connect to a Windows PC. Open 'Bluetooth & devices' in the PC's settings app, then click 'Add a device.'

Select 'Bluetooth'.

'SHIROW-3' was displayed, so I clicked on it.

The connection is complete, so click 'Done'.

The device 'SHIROW-3' has been added.

You can hear the clicking sound of the mouse in actual use in the following video. The clicking sound and the sound of pressing the side buttons are quite quiet, so it seems you can use it without worrying about disturbing those around you.

The MAPP reissue mouse 'M-SHIROW1' retains the exterior design of the mouse designed by Mr. Shiro in 2002, but its functionality has been upgraded to ELECOM's latest mouse standards. It boasts a battery life of up to approximately 45 days on a single full charge, a wireless range of up to approximately 10m, and the ability to switch between up to three connected devices.

The 'Masamune Shirow Reissue Design Mouse M-SHIROW1' comes in three colors: black, blue, and white, with 3,300 units of each color available. The price is 12,800 yen (tax included). It is scheduled to be released on May 1st, and pre-orders can be placed through the official store until April 30th.
