Nankai Electric Railway, the parent company of Nankai Ferry, which operates ferries connecting Wakayama Port and Tokushima Port, has announced its intention to withdraw from the ferry business at the end of March 2028.

According to Nankai Electric Railway, due to declining revenue since the COVID-19 pandemic and rising fuel costs in recent years, the company has been in a state of insolvency since fiscal year 2021. Replacing the hull of the 'Ferry Katsuragi,' which will be in service for 26 years, is financially difficult, and the company has decided to withdraw from the business after judging that efficient operation and management with only one 'Ferry Ai' is impossible.

According to the documents presented, the number of passengers, which plummeted during the COVID-19 pandemic, has recovered to some extent. While revenue has increased, the company is still operating at a loss.

An unprecedented situation of unpaid crowdfunding – an emergency interview with Jiro Ishii about 'Shibuya Scramble Stories'

The rule for 'Ubugoe' was that all the collected donations would be transferred to the project owner, Storytelling, in full on September 1, 2025. However, the donations were not transferred on that day. When we contacted the person in charge of 'Ubugoe,' they said they were 'unaware' of it. It seemed that the person in charge was also completely unaware of it.

On September 2nd, 2025, I called Mr. Kazuo Okada, President and CEO of Ubugoe Co., Ltd., which operates 'Ubugoe,' and he replied, 'I accidentally transferred the money to the wrong account. Therefore, please wait until September 16th for the transfer.' I was truly surprised and flustered, so I said, 'Could you please transfer it even if it's not the full amount?' He replied, 'If it's 3 million yen...' and he made the transfer on the spot after confirming it. That was the first time I received a payment from him.
