Apple is paying iPhone designers an unprecedented bonus to prevent them from leaving the company.

It has been revealed that Apple has given its designers a special bonus to prevent them from being poached by competitors like OpenAI. This is a unique bonus, as one must have worked for Apple for four years to receive the full amount.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has reportedly given bonuses to designers involved in iPhone hardware design by allocating them company stock.
This bonus is structured so that eligibility is determined over a four-year period, and is expected to be worth a maximum of approximately $200,000 (about 32 million yen) to $400,000 (about 64 million yen).

Bloomberg reported that 'the bonus payments are intended to stem the wave of employee turnover at AI startups like OpenAI.'
According to reports, Apple's management is increasingly concerned about losing employees to competitors. OpenAI, in particular, is working on new hardware development in collaboration with former iPhone designer Jony Ive, and its hardware division is co-led by Tang Tan, a former Apple executive who led the iPhone product design team and is currently receiving a bonus, making it a particularly attractive option for Apple employees.

Apple is trying to stem the brain drain by offering generous bonuses, but even so, it reportedly doesn't come close to the amounts offered by some of its competitors. For example, OpenAI is offering Apple employees who want to switch jobs $1 million (approximately 160 million yen) worth of stock per year.
Tan's team has reportedly poached dozens of Apple employees, not just those involved with the iPhone, with members who worked on the development of the iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro moving to OpenAI.
Apple has a history of paying bonuses for similar reasons, including in 2021. Bloomberg reports that they did so again in 2022, in an attempt to retain their employees.
