In Japan, Nintendo sold the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusively through pre-orders, so many gamers were frustrated by the difficulty in getting their hands on one at launch. Nevertheless, as of the end of December 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 had recorded cumulative worldwide sales of 17.37 million units, surpassing the PlayStation 4 (PS4) in the United States to become 'the fastest-selling game console in American history.'

However, according to the latest Bloomberg report, Nintendo is expected to cut production of the Nintendo Switch 2 by 33% due to sluggish sales in the United States. Sources say Nintendo had initially planned to produce 6 million units of the Nintendo Switch 2 this quarter (January-March), but plans to reduce production to 4 million units. This production cut is expected to continue beyond April, but specific production figures have not been disclosed.

Bloomberg points out that while the Nintendo Switch 2 achieved record sales figures upon its launch in the United States, it has since failed to meet Nintendo's expectations. However, it is expected to continue to be in high demand in Japan due to its low price, despite lower profitability.

Nintendo's stock price had been rising following the success of ' Poco a Pokémon, ' released in early March 2026, but has now fallen following this news. Bloomberg reports that the gains from the success of 'Poco a Pokémon' have been wiped out.

Like electronics manufacturers worldwide, Nintendo is facing cost pressures, including soaring memory prices due to AI demand. While there have been reports that Nintendo is considering raising the price of the Nintendo Switch 2, the rising memory prices have not influenced the production cuts; rather, the decline in consumer demand is the sole reason for the production reductions.

In fact, Nintendo's president, Shuntaro Furukawa, stated at the company's earnings briefing in February 2026 that 'overseas sales were slightly weaker than expected,' acknowledging the sluggishness of overseas demand.
