Previously, when setting up a new Windows 11 system, the user folder name was automatically created based on the Microsoft account's email address and profile name. However, if the name is long or contains full-width characters, the user folder name can become inconvenient to use.

With this change, a 'User folder name' field will appear on the screen where you choose your PC name during the initial setup process, allowing you to enter your preferred name. In other words, you can now set a user folder name that is easy to understand from the start.

As of October 2025, a feature to customize user folder names had been introduced, but it required changing the name via the command prompt, making it inconvenient for the average user. The key point of this change is that user folder names can now be customized through on-screen operations.

Microsoft states, 'We have further expanded the feature that we began rolling out to Insiders in the fall of 2025, allowing you to specify a custom name for your user folder on the 'Device Name' page in Windows Setup. This update makes it even easier to choose a custom name.'

However, you can't just name anything you want; you have to follow Windows' standard naming conventions , and only letters, numbers, and some symbols are allowed. Also, this setting can only be changed during setup; if you don't change it then, it will proceed with the automatic folder naming convention as before.

This user folder name customization feature is included in the preview versions of Windows 11 Dev Channel (build 26300.8068) and Beta Channel (build 26220.8062) distributed to the Windows Insider program on Friday, March 13, 2026.
