YouTube's cheap, ad-free plan 'YouTube Premium Lite' now allows background playback and temporary saving of videos



YouTube has announced that it has added background playback and temporary saving features to its 'YouTube Premium Lite' subscription plan, which costs 780 yen per month and limits the display of advertisements.

YouTube Premium, a monthly subscription plan for 1,280 yen, offers benefits such as the ability to watch YouTube videos ad-free, temporarily save and play YouTube videos in the background, watch YouTube Music and music videos ad-free, and access other new and additional features.

Meanwhile, YouTube Premium Lite, a monthly subscription plan costing ¥780, does not display ads in videos on games, fashion, beauty, news, and other topics. However, ads are displayed in music content, short videos, and search results. YouTube announced that YouTube Premium Lite will include the ability to play most videos in the background and the ability to temporarily download most videos.



Background playback is a feature that allows you to continue playing videos even when you are using other apps or your smartphone screen is turned off, while the download feature allows you to temporarily save videos and playlists so that you can watch them offline without an internet connection.

However, downloading and background playback are not available for short videos or music content. Additional features like skipping, queuing, and 'continue watching' are still unavailable with YouTube Premium Lite. YouTube states, 'YouTube Premium remains the best choice for those who want to watch all videos, including music content and YouTube Music Premium, ad-free, offline, and in the background.'
