X is developing a label for 'AI-generated posts'

X has been criticized for its use of AI and its transparency, including the use of AI to

generate sexual images and spread misinformation . According to a post by app researcher Nima Owji, X is developing a toggle switch to indicate when a post contains AI-generated content, and content generated or edited by AI may be labeled.

Images and videos generated by X's AI, Grok , are watermarked to make it clear that the content is AI-generated. However, at the time of writing, X is not required to disclose whether posts contain AI-generated content. Nikita Beer, X's head of product, emphasized the importance of transparency regarding posts made by AI and bots, saying, 'People come to X to see human behavior and emotions. That's why we must make every effort to combat anything that distorts or manipulates them. There's nothing more unsettling than thinking you're reading human words only to find out they're a machine, or an account run at the direction of an unknown commercial or government entity.'

The image below, posted by independent app researcher Owji to X, appears to be part of X's efforts to make posts more transparent. The 'Content disclosure' popup has two toggle switches: 'Disclose paid promotion' and 'Made with AI,' allowing users to disclose information about the post.

According to Owji, the 'Made with AI' switch is a feature X is developing that will allow users to label their posts as AI-generated content. 'When this feature is released, if you post AI-generated content and don't label it, it's likely to violate X's rules,' Owji said.

'Made with AI' is a feature currently under development that Owji discovered, and at the time of writing, X has not officially released any details. Owji revealed that it will be implemented soon, but it is unclear whether the 'Made with AI' switch will actually be implemented, and if so, when it will be released.

Social Media Today, a media outlet covering social media news, commented on the 'Made with AI' labeling, saying, 'The question is whether putting the onus on users to add labels with a toggle switch is an effective approach. Even if not labeling is punishable as a terms of service violation, there is also the risk that automated profiles will continue posting until banned, and then create new accounts to continue sharing fake content.'
