Cancer prevention is deeply connected to the lifestyle habits of each and every one of us. In recent years, a wealth of international research has scientifically demonstrated that alcohol consumption is a factor that increases the risk of cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), has assessed alcohol consumption as 'carcinogenic to humans.' This is because numerous studies have shown that alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing multiple cancers, including those of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver (hepatocellular carcinoma), colon, and breast.
The important point is that the more alcohol you drink, the higher your risk of cancer. Furthermore, research to date has not yet determined the amount of alcohol that can be said to be 'safe,' and it is known that even small amounts of alcohol can increase your risk of cancer. In particular, there is a certain number of Japanese people who are constitutionally sensitive to alcohol (people who have a genetic disability that makes it difficult to break down alcohol), so extra care is needed.
Previous research has shown that reducing alcohol consumption can potentially lower the risk of various diseases, including cancer. It is important for each of us to correctly understand that alcohol consumption is one of the risk factors for cancer, to consider the amount of alcohol we drink based on our own constitution, age, gender, medical history, etc., and to create an environment where people can 'know,' 'consider,' and 'choose' about alcohol.
The Japanese Cancer Association will continue to provide accurate information on 'alcohol and cancer' to help the public make informed and healthy choices.
