Matsuya's 'Chicken Doten-style Pot' Tasting Review: Sweet and spicy miso sauce makes rice disappear in an instant

Matsuya's new hot pot menu item, ' Chicken Doteni-Style Hot Pot, ' a Matsuya-style take on Nagoya's famous

doteni , was released on January 27, 2025. It features large pieces of chicken tossed in a spicy special miso, as well as tofu and a soft-boiled egg. It can be enjoyed as a hot pot or poured over rice in a bowl, so we decided to try it out to see what it tastes like.

Arrived at Matsuya.

The chicken dote-ni style hot pot is highly recommended.

I ordered from the ticket machine. The chicken dote-ni-style hot pot was 960 yen including tax, and I could choose the amount of rice for the same price, so I went for the extra large.

Within a few minutes, the chicken dote-ni-style hotpot was served, along with rice and miso soup.

The pot is heated with solid fuel and the soup is bubbling away.

The sauce is a special spicy miso made with soybean miso and rice miso, and the dote-ni is topped with a soft-boiled egg, tofu, and green onions.

Nagoya's doteni is made with stewed pork offal, but Matsuya's doteni is made with chicken. While it retains the classic doteni element of 'meat stewed in a sweet and spicy miso that goes well with rice,' the key point is the prominent spicy flavor and garlic. This spiciness and garlic are what make it 'Matsuya-style.'

The seasoning is quite strong, but it can be made milder by cracking a soft-boiled egg and mixing the yolk in, or crumbled tofu and eating it together.

I tried putting it on rice.

The sweet and spicy miso sauce soaks into the rice, making it easy to eat. Nagoya doteni is characterized by the soft and squishy texture of pork offal, but this doteni allows you to enjoy the firm texture of chicken. The soft and squishy skin of the chicken gives it a Nagoya-style doteni feel, which is an interesting point.

The solid fuel flame lasted a long time, and the miso sauce remaining in the pot evaporated, concentrating the sweet and spicy flavor. I recommend adding rice to the pot at the end and mixing it with the concentrated sauce.

The chicken dote-ni-style hot pot costs 960 yen (tax included) and will be available at Matsuya restaurants nationwide from January 27, 2026, with some exceptions.

By the way, Matsuya's signature menu item, beef rice, is also available as a frozen food, and a 30-meal set is available on Amazon.co.jp for 8,980 yen (299 yen per meal) including tax.
