In an article dated February 3, 2026, Reuters reported that 'OpenAI is unhappy with some of Nvidia's latest AI chips and has been looking for replacements since 2025, according to eight sources familiar with the matter. This could complicate the relationship between two of the most high-profile companies in the AI boom.'
Reuters reported, 'In September 2025, NVIDIA announced its intention to invest up to $100 billion (approximately 15.5 trillion yen) in OpenAI. The deal gave NVIDIA shares in OpenAI, and OpenAI was to receive the funds needed to purchase advanced chips. The deal was expected to be completed within a few weeks, but negotiations dragged on for months. Changes in the company's product roadmap also changed the type of computing resources required, stalling negotiations with NVIDIA. OpenAI was dissatisfied with the speed at which NVIDIA's hardware returned answers, and sources said it needed new hardware to cover about 10% of OpenAI's inference computing needs in the future.' He added that this suggests a rift is developing between OpenAI and NVIDIA.
However, CEO Altman denied the reports, posting, 'We are thrilled to be working with NVIDIA. They are developing the world's best AI chips. We look forward to being a strong NVIDIA customer for many years to come.'
We love working with NVIDIA and they make the best AI chips in the world. We hope to be a gigantic customer for a very long time.
