On September 22, 2025, OpenAI and NVIDIA announced a strategic partnership to build AI infrastructure to accelerate the development and deployment of OpenAI's next-generation AI models. To support the large-scale infrastructure development, NVIDIA announced its intention to invest up to $100 billion (approximately 14.8 trillion yen) in OpenAI depending on the deployment of the system. CEO Huang described this as 'the largest AI infrastructure project in history.'

However, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) at the end of January 2026, NVIDIA CEO Huang privately emphasized to industry insiders that the approximately 14 trillion yen contract was non-binding and not finalized. He also criticized OpenAI's business approach as 'lacking discipline' and expressed concerns about the AI development race with Google and Anthropic. Furthermore, doubts have been raised within NVIDIA about a large-scale deal with OpenAI, with some insiders revealing that 'negotiations have not progressed beyond the early stages.'
In response to the report, an NVIDIA spokesperson stated that the relationship is good, saying, 'NVIDIA has been a preferred partner of OpenAI for the past decade and looks forward to continuing our collaboration with OpenAI.'

Speaking to reporters in Taipei on January 31, 2026, CEO Huang denied reports that he was unhappy with OpenAI, calling them 'nonsense.'
Huang added, 'We're going to make a huge investment in OpenAI. I believe in OpenAI. The work they do is incredible. They're one of the most important companies of our time, and I'm really looking forward to working with Sam (OpenAI CEO Sam Altman). Sam is closing the investment round, and we'll definitely be involved. It's probably the largest investment we've ever made,' he said, emphasizing that the partnership is going well.
In response to a question about whether the investment will exceed $100 billion, Huang said, 'No, it won't.' He added, 'It's up to Sam to announce how much he wants to raise.'
