The job listing states, 'We are looking for a Senior Engineer to contribute to shaping GOG GALAXY's architecture, tools, and development standards with Linux in mind from day one,' and 'You will build and maintain GOG GALAXY on Linux while collaborating on cross-platform solutions (Windows/macOS).'

GOG GALAXY is a desktop client that allows you to manage your GOG games, but until now it has only been available for Windows and macOS, and Linux users have been calling for GOG GALAXY to be compatible with Linux for many years.

GOG owner Michał Kiciński has previously said in interviews that 'Windows is the worst,' and that Linux support is 'one of the areas we need to focus on in our 2026 strategy,' but did not specify a timeframe.

In recent years, there has been a movement in the gaming industry to support Linux. For example, Valve, which operates the game sales platform Steam, is developing Proton , a compatibility layer software that allows existing Windows games to be played on Linux, and several game development communities have formed the Open Gaming Collective (OGC), a group that aims to improve the Linux gaming ecosystem.

The proportion of Linux users is significantly lower than the overall population, accounting for just 3% of Steam users as of November 2025, but its share is gradually increasing due to the spread of Linux-based portable gaming PCs such as Steam Deck.

In the job posting, GOG said, 'We build games for gamers who value preservation, community, and nostalgia. Our mission is to keep games alive forever. To do this, it's essential that we deliver a seamless, modern experience that resonates with today's players, while staying true to the GOG identity. While we're currently available on Windows and macOS, Linux is the next big frontier. If you're passionate about building complex desktop software, shaping our Linux platform strategy, and having a tangible impact on products used by millions of gamers, this role is perfect for you.'
