Meta invests over $9 billion in Corning, developer of Gorilla Glass



Corning , known for its Gorilla Glass , a specialty glass product used in smartphones, has announced that it has signed a multi-year contract with Meta worth up to $6 billion (approximately 920 billion yen) to accelerate the construction and operation of data centers.

Under the new agreement, Corning will provide Meta with the latest innovations in optical fiber, cable and more, as it expands manufacturing capacity across its North Carolina operations and opens a new optical cable manufacturing facility in Hickory, North Carolina.

'Making our technology a reality and supporting our goal of personalized superintelligence requires powerful servers and hardware to connect and transfer information in near real time. Fiber optic cable is a critical component in providing this connectivity,' said Meta. 'Our multi-year agreement with Corning to supply fiber optic cable for data center infrastructure will enable Corning to expand its manufacturing footprint in North Carolina and create new jobs in the state.'



Meta claims to have 26 data centers in the US, employing 30,000 people, and has revealed plans to invest trillions of dollars by 2025 in its quest to develop superintelligence.

Corning stated, 'Our long-term partnership with Meta reflects Corning's commitment to developing, innovating, and manufacturing in America the critical technologies that power next-generation data centers. This investment will expand our manufacturing footprint in North Carolina, increasing Corning's employment levels in the state by 15 to 20 percent and helping to retain a highly skilled workforce of more than 5,000 people, including scientists, engineers, and production teams at two of the world's largest fiber optic cable manufacturing facilities.'
