Meta signs agreements with nuclear power producers Vistra, TerraPower and Oklo to secure up to 6.6 GW of power by 2035

Meta provides AI services and various apps to many users around the world. Operating the data centers that support these services requires a huge amount of electricity. Meta has announced a new nuclear power project to secure the power needed to support its future business. This will secure Meta up to 6.6GW of power.

Vistra and Meta Announce Agreements to Support Nuclear Plants in PJM and Add New Nuclear Generation to the Grid
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/vistra-and-meta-announce-agreements-to-support-nuclear-plants-in-pjm-and-add-new-nuclear-generation-to-the-grid-302656941.html
On January 9, 2026 local time, Meta announced that following a nuclear RFP process , it had signed contracts with three companies that will contribute to the supply of clean and reliable energy to the electric grid, maintain ongoing investment in nuclear power plant operations, and support the nuclear fuel supply chain, American jobs, and AI innovation. The three companies that signed contracts with Meta are Oklo , which develops small modular reactors (SMREs) smaller than conventional nuclear reactors; TerraPower , which conducts research and development into next-generation nuclear reactors; and Vistra , America's largest competitive power producer.
Meta describes Oklo and TerraPower as 'the next generation of American developers developing safer, more advanced reactors and accelerating the development of nuclear technology.' The company explained that its agreements with Vistra will fund the extension of operating lives and increased power generation at Perry Nuclear Power Plant and Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant in Ohio, and Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Plant in Pennsylvania. The nuclear power project announced by Meta will power Prometheus, the company's multi-gigawatt AI factory in New Albany, Ohio.

Meta's nuclear power projects are expected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of long-term operational jobs, supporting up to 6.6 GW of new and existing clean energy by 2035. Importantly, the nuclear power projects will provide reliable and stable electricity to the electric grid, strengthen America's nuclear supply chain, and support new and existing jobs building and operating American power plants.
The agreement with Meta provides Oklo and TerraPower with increased business certainty, enabling them to secure financing to advance their projects and ultimately increase the grid's energy capacity, which will be a key tool in maintaining grid reliability and ensuring stable wholesale electricity prices for all customers in the long term.
The agreement between Meta and TerraPower will provide funding to support the development of two new Natrium units capable of generating up to 690 MW of stable power, scheduled for delivery as early as 2032. The agreement also allows Meta to acquire energy rights from up to six Natrium units with a total generating capacity of 2.1 GW.

Our agreement with Oklo will advance the development of a groundbreaking nuclear energy project in Pike County, Ohio. This advanced nuclear technology campus is expected to be operational as early as 2030 and will deliver up to 1.2 GW of clean baseload electricity directly to the PJM market, supporting our operations in the region.

Under the agreement with Vistra, Meta will purchase more than 2.1 GW of electricity from Vistra's operating nuclear power plants in Ohio through an additional 20-year nuclear power contract. Additionally, Meta will purchase electricity from Vistra's nuclear power plants in Ohio and Beaver Valley, Pennsylvania. All three plants are located in and will continue to serve the PJM grid.
Meta's commitment will ensure these facilities continue to provide reliable power to the regional grid. The new capacity additions at each facility (a total of 433 MW) are expected to be operational in the early 2030s, meeting future demand growth in the PJM grid region. This means that with Meta's help, Vistra will be able to build additional facilities, providing more reliable and readily available power for consumers to enjoy.
