YouTube CEO Neil Mohan announces plan to prevent 'AI slop'

AI slop is a term defined as 'low-quality digital content mass-produced by AI.' While some AI slop has become widely known through memes, most is currently viewed as meaningless content saturated with fiction. YouTube has announced that it will begin taking measures to curb the spread of such low-quality AI content.

In YouTube's annual report in early 2026, CEO Neil Mohan said, 'The rise of AI has raised concerns about low-quality content, or 'AI slop.' As an open platform, we allow a wide range of free expression while ensuring that people feel comfortable spending time on our platform. Once-quirky trends, like ASMR and watching other people's gaming videos, have now become mainstream hits. But with this openness comes a responsibility to maintain the high-quality viewing experience that users expect. To reduce the spread of low-quality AI content, we are strengthening our existing systems, which have proven effective in combating spam and clickbait, and are actively working to curb the spread of low-quality, repetitive content.'

YouTube itself is actively using AI, optimizing recommended videos and implementing tools such as auto-dubbing and AI-driven questioning. According to CEO Mohan, in December 2025 alone, 20 million people used the question tool to ask questions like, 'What's the story behind the lyrics of this song?' or 'What ingredients do I need to make this recipe?' YouTube's auto-dubbed content has been watched by an average of more than 6 million people per day for more than 10 minutes.

User adoption of AI is also on the rise, with over one million channels reportedly using YouTube's AI creation tools in December. Mohan said, 'Just as synthesizers, Photoshop, and CGI revolutionized sound and video, AI will be a huge boon for creators who embrace it. By 2026, you'll be able to create short videos using your own likeness, create games using simple text prompts, and experiment with music.'

On the other hand, the number of malicious AI-generated content that violates the rights of others, such as deepfakes, is also increasing, making it difficult to distinguish between real and AI-generated content. YouTube requires that AI-generated content be clearly labeled and that users disclose any altered or synthetic content they create to be realistic. However, this labeling alone is sometimes insufficient, and harmful synthetic media that violates the Community Guidelines is apparently being removed.

'Building on Content ID , a system trusted by our partners for over a decade, we are giving creators new tools to control the use of their likeness in AI-generated content,' said Mohan. 'Finally, we continue our commitment to protecting creative integrity by supporting important legislation like the No Fakes Act.'
