A method to identify individual bears using 'face recognition' has been developed

Cases of wild bears harming humans are occurring not only in Japan but all over the world, increasing the need for research into bear ecology and efforts to coexist with them. In this context, a project called ' BearID ' is attracting attention, which is developing technology to recognize and identify individual bears by their faces.

How facial recognition for bears can help ecologists manage wildlife

The BearID project collects bear data by installing cameras in forests and mountains. The cameras are manufactured by Reconyx, Bushnel, Trailmaster, and Browning, with the primary focus being Browning's 1080p cameras.

The cameras are installed discreetly.

We will create a machine learning model based on the collected data to enable bear face recognition.

This will allow bears to be identified based on their faces captured on camera.

According to cultural anthropologist Emily Wanderer , in Canada, when a bear kills a human, the bear is captured and DNA tested. If it is confirmed to be the bear responsible, it is euthanized; if it is a different bear, it is released back into the wild. Once BearID's facial recognition system is put into practical use, it is expected to dramatically simplify the process of identifying bears. Wanderer also commented, 'I believe that by making it easier to identify individual bears through facial recognition, a wider range of people will be able to deepen their understanding of bears as a whole.'
