The Skills feature is different from GPTs , which previously allowed users to customize ChatGPT without coding, adjusting prompts to suit specific needs.

Claude's Skills function, which is the model used, is characterized by its configurability, which allows AI agents to be given specialized knowledge and organizational context in advance and work together as multiple 'skills,' and its portability, which means that once built, they can be used in different environments such as apps and APIs.

Skills are also efficient, loading only the resources needed when they are needed, and can even include executable code for tasks that require more reliability than traditional token generation.

According to a report from BleepingComputer, the Skills feature being introduced to ChatGPT is being developed under the codename hazelnuts and will be available via slash commands.

The feature will include a skill editor and the option to convert existing custom GPTs into skills. While the specific rollout date has not been specified, the plan is to release it in January 2026.

In addition, Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, has already been equipped with the Skills function ahead of ChatGPT.
