GitHub Copilot is an AI coding tool that supports multiple text editors and IDEs, including Visual Studio Code and Vim. The initial version of GitHub Copilot used OpenAI's ' Codex ' as its internal model, and has since been updated to new OpenAI models such as 'GPT-3.5', 'GPT-3.5 Turbo', 'GPT-4', and 'GPT-4o'.
On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, GitHub announced that OpenAI's inference capability-specialized models 'OpenAI o1-preview' and 'OpenAI o1-mini' will be available on GitHub Copilot. In addition, GitHub announced support for Anthropic's 'Claude 3.5 Sonnet' and Google's 'Gemini 1.5 Pro,' and stated that it will actively incorporate models other than OpenAI into GitHub Copilot.
The four models will be rolled out first to Copilot Chat and later to other features. OpenAI o1-preview and OpenAI o1-mini are available now, Claude 3.5 Sonnet will be available within the next week, and Gemini 1.5 Pro will be available in the coming weeks.
