Previously, if you wanted to ask questions or make requests about what you were working on using the ChatGPT app for macOS, you had to copy and paste the text from your coding app into ChatGPT.

However, with the new feature called 'Work with Apps,' you can now automatically send the code section you're working on to ChatGPT, eliminating the need to copy and paste code. Note that unlike AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot , ChatGPT cannot write code directly into your coding app.

According to Alexander Embiricos, desktop product lead at OpenAI, 'Work with Apps' uses macOS

screen readers and accessibility APIs to read text from various coding apps. In addition, to use 'Work with Apps', users must install a special extension to query the content.

In terminal, ChatGPT will automatically read the last 200 lines, in coding apps it will read all the code you've written, or you can select parts of code or text and ChatGPT will read just the selected parts.

OpenAI says that 'Work with Apps' is 'very useful for starting a new chat, picking up where you left off, or asking follow-up questions without interrupting the flow,' and that it plans to integrate with other types of apps, such as text-based apps that can be used for writing tasks.

At the time of writing, 'Work with Apps' is available to users of the paid ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Teams plans, and will be available for ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Edu in the coming weeks.

OpenAI also opened up the ChatGPT app for Windows to all users, including free users, on November 14, 2024. Until now, the ChatGPT app for Windows was only available to ChatGPT Plus users.

The ChatGPT app for Windows has the same features as the web-based ChatGPT, such as ChatGPT search and Advanced Mode, but you will need to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus to use these features.
