Instagram changes employees to come in five days a week, with remote work available when necessary

It has been revealed that Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has informed employees that the company will return to a five-day-a-week in-office work schedule starting in 2026. While Big Tech companies are gradually eliminating remote work, Meta still allows remote work, but Instagram is the only company to change its policy.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, remote work has become widespread, but due to concerns that it could lead to a decline in productivity, big tech companies have changed their policies to require employees to come into the office. In the case of Amazon, the company is requiring employees to come into the office at least three days a week from May 2023, and CEO Andy Jassy has said, 'If you can't agree to a return to the office, it won't work at Amazon.'

While other companies, such as Google and Zoom, have also shifted to returning employees to their offices, Meta has continued to allow employees to work remotely. However, on December 1, 2025, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced to employees that the company would shift to working in the office five days a week starting February 2, 2026.
Regarding the change in policy, CEO Mosseri said, 'It's clear that evolution is necessary,' and expressed that '2026 will be a tough year.'
Only 'Instagram employees with assigned desks' are required to work in the office, and remote work is permitted 'when necessary,' though the timing is vaguely stated as 'at each individual's discretion.'
In line with this change in policy, the company has also decided to reduce regular meetings. Meetings will be reviewed every six months to determine whether they are necessary, and anything that is not absolutely necessary will be eliminated.
Other goals include 'creating more prototypes of product outlines instead of creating presentation materials' and 'speeding up decision-making and removing obstacles.'
This change in policy only applies to Instagram and does not affect Facebook or WhatsApp, which are also part of the same Meta.
Incidentally, some people point out that remote work improves productivity.
