Discord introduces a feature to ignore rather than block users

On Discord, users may interact with each other if they know each other personally, or they may join a 'server' where users with certain common interests or hobbies gather and interact with other users. However, there are some users who have troublesome interactions or repeatedly make unpleasant posts in the server, and some people may have experienced distancing themselves from the server because of such users.

Discord has had a 'block' feature for some time now, which allows you to remove users you want to distance yourself from from your friend list and prevent them from sending you messages or DMs. However, if the blocked user tries to send you a message or checks their friend list, they will know that you have blocked them, so there are cases where it is difficult to take the plunge and block them.

In response to these voices, Discord has added a new feature called 'Ignore' to distance yourself from the other person without them knowing. If you set a specific user to 'ignore,' you will not see the user's new messages, DMs, server message notifications, profile, activity, etc. On the other hand, the ignored user's screen will remain the same as before, so there is little risk of them realizing that they have been ignored.

If you want to 'ignore' a user, tap the menu icon in the top right corner of the user's profile.

Tap 'Ignore.'

A confirmation screen will appear, so tap 'Ignore' again. You can now ignore the user.

Discord also announced that it has established a non-profit organization called 'ROOST' in collaboration with partners such as Google, OpenAI, and Roblox. ROOST is an organization that provides free and open source safety tools to organizations of all sizes to address challenges related to child safety and digital safety.

Providing safety tools from a nonprofit reduces the need for organizations to develop safety tools from scratch, allowing smaller companies and organizations to focus on growing their services while improving user safety. In the future, ROOST will provide free open source tools for discovering, verifying, and reporting child sexual abuse content (CSAM), and will also strengthen its safety infrastructure using large-scale language models.

Clint Smith, Discord's Chief Legal Officer, will serve as a director of ROOST, and Discord will contribute funding, technology, and employee expertise to ROOST.

In a blog post, Discord said, 'As technology continues to evolve, the safety landscape changes too. This creates new challenges that no single organization can address alone. That's why it's essential for us as an industry to invest in safety features to make the Internet a safer place for everyone.'
