OpenAI is reportedly working on developing its own social networking site, similar to X (formerly Twitter) and Meta

by World Economic Forum

The Verge, an IT news site, reported that AI company OpenAI may develop a social networking service (SNS) similar to X (formerly Twitter) and Meta. The project is still in the early stages, but an internal prototype has been developed focusing on image generation using ChatGPT and has a social feed function.

According to multiple sources, The Verge has learned that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has privately solicited feedback from outside parties on the SNS development project. It is unclear whether OpenAI will release SNS as a separate app or integrate it into ChatGPT.

For OpenAI, which develops large-scale language models using large amounts of data, SNS is a 'powerful means of collecting training data from users.' In fact, X and Meta, which operate their own SNS, use the vast amounts of data collected from their SNS to train AI, and their strength is that they can use real-time data for AI training.

The Verge believes that if OpenAI were to launch a new social networking site, the relationship between OpenAI co-founder and xAI CEO Elon Musk and CEO Altman would become even worse.

When Musk proposed to buy OpenAI's non-profit division for $9.74 billion in February 2025, Altman responded by saying, 'Fine, but if you want, I'll buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.' He took a joking stance against Musk.

The Verge also pointed out that if OpenAI enters the SNS market, the conflict with Meta will also accelerate. When it was reported in February 2025 that Meta was planning a chat AI app to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT , CEO Altman commented on X, 'Okay, we might make a social app.'

Of course, OpenAI has many projects, and it is unclear whether the SNS development project, which is still in its early stages, will come to fruition. However, the fact that SNS development is being considered within OpenAI shows that OpenAI is serious about expanding its business at a time when the company is expected to grow more and more, The Verge pointed out.

In addition, The Verge asked an OpenAI spokesperson for a response regarding the SNS development, but at the time of writing the article, a response was not available.
