Director Eli Roth agreed to our interview.

Q:
Have you heard of the game Borderlands? If so, what are your thoughts and impressions on it, and who are your favorite characters?

Director Eli Roth (hereinafter, Roth):
I knew about the game, but I'd never really played it. But I love sci-fi movies, and I wanted to make something that was totally out there, big

and exciting, like Barbarella meets The Fifth Element, or Mad Max 2 meets Toby Dammit , something visually wild. And of course, I understand the game now.

Q:
This film realizes the idea of making a science fiction film that mixes Star Wars, Escape from Escape, Mad Max , and even The Fifth Element and Starship Troopers , but when did you start thinking about such a grand idea?

loss:
I always had the idea of making a spaghetti western space opera, no matter how crazy it turned out to be. Westerns have a clear template, it's easy to tell who's your friend and who's your enemy, and there's something appealing about both. With this film, we've created a mix of different movies with a western structure, set on a different planet from Earth 3000 years in the future.

Q:
I believe this is the first time for Director Ross to direct a movie based on a video game. How did you come to direct this film?

loss:
Before I became the director of this game, I was looking for something different, something challenging, something I could tackle on a large scale. At the same time, the producers of this game were looking for someone to take on the role of director. They liked my films, ' A Clock in the Wall ' and ' Death Wish, ' and after meeting with them and hitting it off creatively, I gave a presentation and was able to get the job. I also received a lot of support from Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, the company behind the game 'Borderlands.'

Q:
The director is known for many horror films such as '

Hostel ' and ' Green Inferno .' Is the direction of this film an extension of your previous horror and thriller direction? When directing this film, was there anything that helped you in having made such works in the past, or did the production proceed smoothly? Or was this film directed with a completely new approach?

loss:
In recent years, I have distanced myself from the extreme horror films I have made so far, working on films like 'Death Wish' and 'A Clock in My Hand,' which have allowed me to use my creativity in other areas. However, I think I was always ready to take on a film like this one, which relies heavily on visual effects. To be honest, when I returned to the horror world to make ' Thanksgiving ,' I felt like I missed horror. 'Borderlands' was released after 'Thanksgiving,' but in fact, 'Borderlands' was made before 'Thanksgiving.'

Q:
Filming on this film finished in June 2021, but it was not scheduled for release in the United States until August 2024. What aspects of the post-production work did you spend time on? Also, was there any part that you thought went well or was done quickly?

loss:
The work leading up to the release of this film was very difficult. In a large-scale VFX film like this one, which has a very large cast, the usual process is to shoot and edit, then take additional shots. For example, when Marvel makes a film, it is included in the contract to shoot, edit, and then reshoot. However, this film was not produced by Marvel, but by a studio that does not usually produce such films, so the cast was sometimes reassembled just for reshoots. However, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was extremely difficult to adjust the cast's schedule. In particular, the lead actress, Cate Blanchett, was also shooting ' Disclaimer ' at the time, and filming was extended by five months from the original schedule. As this happened, it became increasingly difficult to gather the cast, but in the end, they managed to complete the film.

Q:
The soundtrack for this work was composed by Steve Jablonski, who has worked on film music as well as game music such as Gears of War . How did you come to ask Jablonski to compose the soundtrack?

loss:
I asked Jablonski to compose the soundtrack after seeing the finished film. He's a fantastic composer and I think he brought a lot of his own originality to the work.

Q:
Cate Blanchett, who played the main character Lilith, is one of the most popular actors in Japan. Please tell us why you chose her and any episodes from filming.

loss:
I worked with her on A Clock in the Wall, and it was a fantastic experience. When I read the script for this movie, she was the first thing that came to mind. Most directors want to cast her in a dramatic role with a baton, but I wanted her to have a Vladof gun and a flamethrower. There's nothing she can't do.

Q:
Many fascinating characters appeared in the film, including Lilith. Was there anything you were particular about or found difficult in portraying the characters in the game in a live-action film?

loss:
Personally, I love

Claptrap , and Jack Black was the perfect voice actor for him. Tina has the same rebellious spirit as me, so I can really relate to her. The Borderlands game has a great sense of humor, but also has some great kill scenes. I love the psychos , and I wanted to really bring the world they live in to life with the visuals.

Q:
I was surprised to see the arms dealer Marcus and Caustic Caverns , who also appear in the game, appear in the film. The screenplay for this film was written by Director Ross and Joe Crombie, but were these ideas decided from the early stages of the concept? Or was it decided as the script was revised?

loss:
The script is constantly being refined and will not be finished until the movie is completed. I wanted to incorporate various elements of the game into the film, so I actually shot a scene of ' Wainwright and Hammerlock 's wedding'. But unfortunately, I ended up cutting it. Still, I wanted the world of the game to feel as real and alive as possible.

Q:
Finally, please tell Japanese audiences what they should look out for and how they can enjoy this film.

loss:
Enjoy it on the biggest screen possible!
