According to an announcement made at the technology event CES 2025 in Las Vegas, VLC will add several features using open source AI models.
Jean-Baptiste Kemp, president of VideoLAN, the company that develops VLC, demonstrated the features at the event, including the ability to automatically generate subtitles from audio and the ability to translate subtitles into multiple languages.

Regarding the features of the new function, Kemp said, 'The important thing is that it runs offline, on your machine, without using a cloud service.' As for the automatic translation function, it supports more than 100 languages at the time of development.
AI-based subtitling has been in the works for some time as a plugin using OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition system, but it now appears to be built directly into the app, reports tech media outlet The Verge.

'Previously, VLC users had to download a separate file, usually in .srt format, if the subtitles weren't built into the video. This technology fills in a gap in watching videos with VLC,' PC Mag reported.
The release date of the new features announced this time has not been announced. Kemp said, 'VLC has been downloaded more than 6 billion times. Even in an era where streaming services are mainstream, the number of active VLC users is definitely increasing. I'm looking forward to seeing how much it will grow in the future!'
Further details will be explained in a later blog post.
