People who drink three cups of coffee a day may live two years longer

Coffee is consumed by many people as a way to stay awake and as a recreational drink, and it is said to

have various health benefits . A new paper reviewing the results of 85 previous studies suggests that drinking about three cups of coffee a day is associated with an increase in life expectancy of about two years.

Giant Study Links Drinking Coffee With Almost 2 Extra Years of Life : ScienceAlert

A research team from the University of Coimbra in Portugal pointed out that while coffee consumption was once thought to be unhealthy, recent studies have revealed a variety of health benefits of coffee, and that research over the past 20 years has provided remarkably consistent epidemiological evidence linking moderate coffee consumption with reduced mortality.

The research team looked at the results of 85 studies conducted among people from Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia to examine the association between coffee and mortality and health indicators.

The analysis found that people who regularly drank about three cups of coffee per day had an average life expectancy that was increased by about 1.84 years, and that this was also associated with an increase in healthy life expectancy , the amount of time spent living without being restricted by health problems.

One limitation of the studies reviewed is that they relied on participants' self-reported coffee consumption, and the studies were funded by

the Coffee Science Information Institute , a non-profit organization supported by major international coffee companies.

In addition, because the analysis included so many studies, there are many variables, such as type of coffee consumed, demographics of participants, study duration, and individual differences in the effects of coffee consumption. However, the large number of participants (millions in total) and the diversity of ethnicities are strengths of this study.

The research team analyzed health indicators such as inflammation and metabolism, and also took into account other factors that affect health, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, and investigated the relationship of coffee to biological mechanisms related to age-related diseases and aging.

'Regular coffee consumption is associated with improved muscle, cardiovascular, mental and immune function and appears to be inversely associated with the incidence of the most common diseases in older adults, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, stroke , some cancers, diabetes, dementia, depression and frailty,' the researchers concluded.

'Previous clinical recommendations have often overlooked the role of coffee in healthy ageing,' said study co-author Rodrigo Cunha , professor of medicine at the University of Coimbra. 'Our review highlights that regular, moderate coffee consumption can modulate biological mechanisms that slow down or fail as we age.'
