Sleeping for 5 hours after middle age explodes the risk of having multiple chronic diseases

It's well known that short sleep habits of less than 6 hours are

not good for your health, but when work and hobbies take up time, you can inadvertently cut your sleep. A long-term study tracking sleep duration and chronic disease risk in people aged 50 to 70 found that getting less than 5 hours of sleep significantly increased the risk of developing two or more chronic diseases at the same time. I was pinned down.

Many studies have been conducted on the effect of sleep time on individual diseases, but many elderly people have multiple chronic diseases, and the relationship between such 'multimorbidity' and sleep time. I don't know much about

Therefore, Severine Sabia, who studies public health at the University of Paris, conducted a study targeting middle-aged and elderly people who participated in the `` Whitehall II Cohort Study '', a British cohort study established in 1985.

The study included 7864 men and women aged 50, 60, and 70 without multiple comorbidities, with a mean follow-up of 50-year-old participants of 25.2 years. In addition, multiple comorbidities include diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, depression, dementia, mental disorders other than depression and dementia, A person was defined as having at least 2 of 13 diagnoses of Parkinson's disease, arthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis. Also, the breakdown of sleep time is 544 people (6.9%) 5 hours or less, 2562 people (32.6%) 6 hours, 3589 people (45.6%) 7 hours, 1092 people (13.9%) 8 hours, 77 people (1%) were more than 9 hours.

When the research team analyzed participants' sleep duration and risk of chronic diseases, they found that those who slept five hours or less at the age of 50 had two or more chronic diseases compared to those who slept seven hours. It turned out that there was a 30% higher chance of having it. Similarly, people at the age of 60 who have less than 5 hours are 32% compared to those who have 7 hours, and at the age of 70 it is 40%, the effect of lack of sleep increased with age.

Regarding the results, Sabia said, ``Sleep habits change as you get older, but it is recommended that you sleep 7 to 8 hours a day, and if you sleep more or less than that, you may develop certain chronic diseases. In addition, this study showed that short sleep duration was associated with multiple comorbidities.'

According to Sabia, in order to ensure better sleep, it is important to keep a good sleeping environment, such as a quiet, dark and comfortable temperature in the bedroom before going to bed. It is also recommended not to use electronic devices before bedtime and avoid heavy meals, and exercise and exposure to light during the day are also said to improve sleep quality.
