Drinking coffee may reduce risk of death from a sedentary lifestyle

If you work at a desk or have an indoor hobby, you will inevitably spend a lot of time sitting down each day, but a sedentary lifestyle is known to increase the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and cancer. A study conducted by a Chinese research team showed that people who drink a lot of coffee have a lower risk of death from a sedentary lifestyle.

A sedentary lifestyle is a risk factor for various chronic diseases, and previous research has shown that walking and other methods can reduce the risk . However, the relationship between coffee consumption, which is said to have health benefits, and a sedentary lifestyle is still unclear.

A research team from the School of Medicine at Soochow University in China conducted a study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the United States to examine the relationship between coffee consumption in adults and the risk of death from a sedentary lifestyle.

The study used lifestyle responses from 10,639 participants collected between 2007 and 2018, as well as mortality data through December 31, 2019. Of the subjects, 945 died during the follow-up period, 284 of whom died from cardiovascular disease.

The analysis showed that people who sat for 8 hours or more per day had a 1.46 times higher risk of death from any cause, and a 1.79 times higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease, compared with people who sat for less than 4 hours per day. This result supports previous studies, but the research team also conducted an analysis taking into account 'coffee consumption.'

The analysis revealed that 'the increased risk of death due to a sedentary lifestyle was only seen in adults who did not drink coffee. People who sat for more than six hours a day and drank coffee had a 1.58-fold lower risk of death from any cause compared with people who sat for more than six hours a day and did not drink coffee.'

The study also showed that people in the top quartile of coffee consumption had a lower risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality compared to those who did not drink coffee at all.

The results of this study alone cannot explain the mechanism by which coffee protects people from the harms of a sedentary lifestyle. However, the caffeine in coffee has been shown to reduce the risk of developing

type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease , and coffee also contains antioxidants that help improve metabolism and reduce inflammation. These factors may be responsible for the lower risk of death in coffee drinkers.

The research team concluded, 'It is noteworthy that the joint analysis in this study showed that the association between a sedentary lifestyle and increased mortality was only observed in adults who did not drink coffee, but not in adults who consumed coffee. Given that coffee is a complex compound, further research is needed to explore this miracle compound.'
