Apparently, preparations are underway to bring SteamOS to devices other than Steam Deck

'SteamOS' is a Linux-based OS installed on the portable gaming PC '

Steam Deck '. It has been reported before that SteamOS will be released for third-party devices, but little specific information has been revealed. It has been revealed that preparations are underway to open up SteamOS, as the Steam brand logo guidelines have been updated.

Valve, the developer of SteamOS, has repeatedly reported that it is 'working on plans to enable hardware vendors to ship their own devices with SteamOS,' but has only jokingly stated a timeline such as 'based on Valve standard time ,' and has not revealed any specific progress.

However, on December 4, 2024, the Steam 'logo' documentation was

updated to include a statement about hardware that will be equipped with SteamOS.

The document can be found here:

On page 7 of the document, it says:

'The Powered by SteamOS logo indicates that a hardware device runs SteamOS and will boot into SteamOS when the device is powered on. Partners and manufacturers will ship hardware with a Steam image pre-installed, either provided by Valve or in a format developed in close collaboration with Valve. Do not physically alter the logo or combine it with other branding elements.'

GamingOnLinux, a Linux and Steam-related gaming community, pointed out that the above statement 'partners and manufacturers will ship hardware with the Steam image...' is an indication of progress, and said, 'It will be interesting to see what the first device other than the Steam Deck will be that officially ships with SteamOS. Could it be Valve's VR kit ' Deckard ', which has been leaked, or perhaps another handheld from a third-party vendor?'

In the past, Valve released a list of games being tested with 'Proton,' a compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux-based operating systems, and the list included ARM64-compatible Proton. This led to speculation that 'the development of ARM64-compatible Proton is to support third-party ARM64 devices.'
