The patch notes for SteamOS 3.6.9 beta released by Valve on August 8, 2024 state, 'Added support for additional ROG Ally keys.' Valve designer Lawrence Yang reported, 'The patch note about the ROG Ally key is related to SteamOS's third-party device support. The development team continues to work on adding SteamOS support to third-party portable gaming PCs.'

Valve has previously

said it plans to open up SteamOS to competitors.

However, Yang said that this does not mean that Valve will begin offering SteamOS to third-party portable gaming PCs anytime soon. 'We are making steady progress in preparing to bring SteamOS to third-party devices, but we have not yet released it,' he said.

Valve has also promised to turn the Steam Deck into a dual-boot Windows machine, allowing you to freely swap between the two operating systems, to which Yang said, 'We are working on making Windows drivers available for the Steam Deck OLED . As for dual boot, while it's a priority internally, we're not quite there yet.'
