Xbox CEO Phil Spencer says 'We should develop a handheld'
In an interview with IGN, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer said of the possibility of a portable Xbox, 'I think we need one.'

IGN's interview with Spencer was conducted immediately after the Xbox Games Showcase on June 10, 2024. In the interview, Spencer said, 'While this Xbox Games Showcase focused on game software, we plan to share more information about the Xbox platform in the future.'
On the other hand, IGN mentioned to Spencer, 'There are rumors among users that Microsoft is working on developing a portable console.' Spencer then said, 'I think we need a portable game machine,' and 'The future of Xbox is pretty bright for us. I'm very excited about the team working on different form factors and ways to play.' Regarding the development of a portable Xbox, Spencer said, 'I don't want to say anything. I'd rather let Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, talk about that,' and refrained from commenting on the details of the portable machine.
IGN also asked Spencer, 'If Microsoft were to develop a portable Xbox, would it be a Steam Deck -like piece of hardware that lets you play games offline, or would it be cloud-based hardware that lets you stream games?' Spencer replied, 'I really like devices like the ROG Ally , the Lenovo Legion Go , and the Steam Deck. I think being able to play games locally, as opposed to streaming gameplay, is really important.'
Spencer has previously pointed out that portable gaming PCs such as ROG Ally need a dedicated mode for playing Xbox games, stating, 'I want a portable gaming PC that gives you the feeling that you can turn on the TV and start playing Xbox right away.'

Tony Polanco, head of computing at Tom's Guide, a foreign media outlet, speculated that 'a handheld Xbox may be one way for Xbox to survive and grow further. The release of a handheld Xbox may not easily surpass its competitors, but it may get people talking about Xbox more than they have in the past.'
