In the PS5 software update distributed on December 3, 2024, the PS5 boot screen will be that of the original PlayStation. Therefore, users who have the PS5 software update set to automatic update were able to experience the surprise of the original PlayStation boot screen suddenly appearing when they started up the PS5. In addition, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, five new themes that allow you to customize your home screen have also been added. Four of the five new themes are based on past PlayStations, and the remaining one is a design based on the PlayStation brand itself.

The much-talked-about PS5 boot screen looks like this: First, the original PlayStation boot screen appears, followed by a logo celebrating the 30th anniversary, and then the PS5 home screen appears.

The new theme can be selected from the 'PlayStation 30th Anniversary' setting at the top of the settings screen. If you select a theme from a previous model, the sound effects when operating the console will change to those from previous PlayStation models.

Here's what each theme looks like:

PlayStation 30th Anniversary

Original PlayStation

PS2

PS3

PS4

Please note that this original PlayStation boot screen and new theme are only available for a limited time and will eventually no longer be available.

Kotaku commented, 'Until I switched to the theme of previous PlayStations, I didn't realize how much the old PlayStation sound effects were burned into my brain, and how nostalgic they still felt after so many years (decades?!),' and 'I don't understand why Sony plans to remove this feature, when it's a great way to make your expensive console a little more enjoyable.'

Technology media The Verge describes the distinctive 'beep' sound that plays on the original PlayStation's boot screen in words, saying, 'There are some sounds that are pleasing to people over 30, like the sound of dial-up Internet or the jingle that tells you when a new message has arrived on MSN Messenger. Most of these nostalgic sounds have been replaced by new ones or forgotten over time, but PlayStation has brought back the original sound for its 30th anniversary.'

Additionally, PlayStation has released a 30th anniversary video featuring scenes from many of the classic games released across previous PlayStation models.
