Cloud hosting company Hetzner announces price hike for cloud servers and bandwidth cut of up to 95%

German cloud hosting company Hetzner has notified users in an email that it will increase the prices of its US-based cloud servers and cut the bandwidth included in its cloud server and load balancer plans by up to 95%.

In an email to customers, Hetzner said, 'Starting December 1, 2024 (CET: Central European Time), we will introduce new pricing for newly created cloud servers in our Ashburn and Hillsboro locations in the US, and we will also update the bandwidth included in our cloud servers and load balancers.' 'For existing cloud servers and load balancers in these locations, the new pricing and bandwidth will apply from February 1, 2025 (CET).'

The new Hetzner pricing structure and bandwidth are as follows: The 'CPX' and 'CCX' series plans have increased by about 4.1% to 27.5%, respectively, and the bandwidth has been cut by up to 95%, with some plans going from '20TB' to '1TB'.

Regarding the price and bandwidth changes, Hetzner said, 'With our new pricing structure, we want to make the conditions as fair as possible for customers around the world. To do this, we calculate prices based on local conditions in Europe, Singapore and the US. Before this change, customers with lower resource usage were bearing the costs of other customers who were using much more resources. We want to make things as balanced as possible.'

Software developer Adriano Caloiaro argues that Hetzner's generous bandwidth offers are the reason many customers choose the provider, and that the company has not provided a clear explanation for its price hike despite significantly reducing bandwidth.

In fact, Caloiaro uses six CPX21 servers and pays 42.3 euros (about 6700 yen) per month, but he uses less than 0 TB of bandwidth. Nevertheless, the price increase will increase his monthly payment to 53.94 euros (about 8500 yen), so Caloiaro questions Hetzner's 'fairness'.

The change has also been a hot topic on the social news site Hacker News, with users expressing a variety of opinions. One user commented, 'I actually use less than 1TB of bandwidth, not 20TB, so I have an irrational but negative reaction to the fact that my bandwidth has been reduced by 20 times,' while another user said , 'Hetzner clearly does not like products that are in the red, and they are quick to make changes to products that are in the red, and sometimes even discontinue them altogether.'
